Concepts for Citing the Use of Generative AI
There is no definitve way to cite the use of Generative AI. Some faculty want to see the prompt and the iterative process, and some want students to acknowledge the use of these geneartive AI tools. The issue is that any one session cannot be recreated since each use provides different responses. The context of each assignment/research will decide what the citation should appear as. How much of the citation is needed to help an individual, whether they are a student or a faculty member, when they may want to create something familiar?
For example, a student used a generative AI tool (like ChatPGT) to create survey questions. Because the student did not cite an article, a faculty member or PI can might decide how much information for the prompt is necessary to cite. It could be only the inital prompt session, or the prompt with a brief explanation.
The first ciation is modeled after APA, while the second option is a novel citing approach.
