AI Data Use Notice
Ensuring the privacy and security of UNM Data is paramount when using non-UNM supported AI tools, as these tools may share data with third parties, may result publishing data to the internet, and could result in other substantial harms to those whose data is shared, and to the University. Using UNM-vetted and supported tools to analyze and store UNM data and information helps ensure reasonable and appropriate protections are in place for UNM data, including private and sensitive information.
Use of commercial AI products that have not been evaluated by UNM to ensure that they protect information security and privacy is strongly discouraged. Individuals should exercise caution and refrain from inputting any data that is protected under CUI, FERPA, GLBA, IRB, PII, or other secured data categories. Examples include but are not limited to:
- Student records,
- Personally Identifiable Information (PII) such as
- Social Security numbers,
- addresses,
- Banner IDs,
- phone numbers, and
- email addresses
Secured data categories also encompass information protected by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA), and any other data that is considered sensitive or confidential.
Before using UNM Data, it is always advisable to consult with the appropriate UNM Data Steward for guidance on tools where third-parties could gain access to that data.

- Copilot
- M365 Copilot
- Zoom AI
- Apple Intelligence on capable UNM-supported devices
- UNM’s AI strategy continues to evolve, and supported tools described in this documentation are expected to grow over time.
